Chinese Ambassador Cheng Xueyuan said that development projects implemented by China in Sri Lanka are very vital for the economic development of Sri Lanka.

He said that although projects such as the Hambantota Port and the Colombo Port City Project are key to Sri Lanka’s future development goals, the Western media is looking at it negatively.

Speaking at the launch of the new website of the Sri LankaChina Journalists Forum (SLCJF), the ambassador said that China supported Sri Lanka’s efforts to eradicate terrorism for the betterment and territorial integrity of Sri Lanka.

He also appreciated Sri Lanka’s support for China in recent controversial issues such as Hong Kong and Xinjiang.

He said China’s development would benefit not only China, but the entire world, and that China would not allow any country in the world to isolate it.

“Both sides have benefited from China-Sri Lanka relations and no one can stop China’s development,” he said.

Commenting on the ongoing Hong Kong issue, the ambassador said that Hong Kong had undergone major development when it came under Chinese rule, and that the protests that had begun peacefully there had now become violent.
