Since the outbreak, I’m impressed by the Chinese being very disciplined, and the Chinese government and its Embassy in Sri Lanka had been taking strictest self-quarantine measures, which facilitated and supported Sri Lanka fighting the virus. – Dr Anil Jasinghe
On April 27, Chargé d’affaires of the Chinese Embassy Mr. Hu Wei handed over Sri Lankan Health Minister Mme. Pavithra Wanniarachchi the second batch of Chinese government aid including 20,000 test kits, 10,000 KN95 masks, 100,000 surgical masks, 10,000 PPE coverall, 1,000 protective goggles and 50,000 surgical gloves for fighting the COVID-19 pandemic in the island country.
Hu briefed Minister Wanniarachchi and the media of the two countries about China’s assistance to Sri Lanka since the outbreak, and stressed that at the time of global pandemic, all parties should strengthen unity and cooperation and help each other, instead of playing politicization or stigmatization as some forces do. As a sincere friend, China will, as always, firmly support Sri Lanka’s fight against the epidemic, within its capacity according to Sri Lanka’s needs. We believe that Sri Lanka can overcome the epidemic at an early date.
Wanniarachchi said that the number of confirmed cases in Sri Lanka has been growing fast recently, and some front-line personnel have unfortunately been infected. At this crucial moment, China as a most trusted friend of Sri Lanka, extended its helping hand again with the most urgently needed testing kits, personal protective equipment and other medical materials in large quantities, which is highly appreciated by the Sri Lankan government and her people.
On the sidelines of the hand-over ceremony, Director General of Health Services Dr. Anil Jasinghe, who is also Vice Chairman of the World Health Organization Executive Board, told Xinhua News Agency that Sri Lanka is dependent mainly on the Chinese medical supplies such as test kits and other equipment which have good quality, and medical institutes have not come across any problem in their practice. Since the outbreak, I’m impressed by the Chinese being very disciplined, and the Chinese government and its Embassy in Sri Lanka had been taking strictest self-quarantine measures, which facilitated and supported Sri Lanka fighting the virus. We strongly oppose politicizing or stigmatizing the pandemic. We know this is a global issue.
